EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, titled "Platodes, Worms, Flatworms, and Tapeworms," is an exquisite illustration of various species of Plathelminthes, or flatworms, and Cestoda, or tapeworms. Created by renowned German naturalist Ernst Haeckel and beautifully rendered by Adolf Glitsch in 1904, this artwork is a stunning testament to the intricacy and diversity of these often overlooked organisms. The Platodes, or planarian flatworms, represented here include Gymnophallus choledochus, Echinostoma echinatum, Bucephalus polymorphus, and Polystoma integerrimum. These invertebrates exhibit a wide range of morphologies and behaviors, from the slug-like Gymnophallus, which possesses a notochord and a distinct head, to the more elongated Polystoma, which can regenerate lost body parts. The tapeworms depicted in this illustration are Gyrodactylus elegans, Diplozoon paradoxum, Tristoma coccineum, Calicotyle kroyeri, Caryophyllaeus laticeps, Tetrarhynchus longicollis, Phyllobothrium gracile, and the pork tapeworm, Taenia solium. Tapeworms are characterized by their elongated, segmented bodies and their parasitic lifestyle. Some, like the pork tapeworm, infect humans and other animals through the consumption of undercooked meat, while others, such as Gyrodactylus elegans, are parasites of fish. This mesmerizing artwork not only showcases the breathtaking beauty of these organisms but also serves as a reminder of the vast and intricate web of life that exists beneath the surface of our oceans and waterways.
