EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored engraving, created by the widow Fournier after an original illustration by Edouard Travies for Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle (Universal Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris in 1849, showcases three intriguing wading birds: the Pied Avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta), the Ruff (Philomachus pugnax), and the Pied Avocet or Red-legged Avocet (Recurvirostra pidifera). The Pied Avocet, with its distinctive upturned bill, is a resident of wetlands in Europe, Africa, and Asia. Its slender, black-and-white legs contrast sharply with its chestnut-colored body and blue-gray wings. The Ruff, a medium-sized wader, is characterized by its orange-brown plumage, black and white striped head, and long, red legs. This bird is found in Europe, Asia, and Africa, primarily in damp grasslands and marshes. The third bird in this enchanting tableau is the Ruff, a wading bird with a striking appearance. Its plumage is predominantly orange-brown, with black and white stripes on its head and a long, red bill. The Ruff is native to Europe, Asia, and Africa, and can be found in damp grasslands and marshes. The intricate details of these birds' plumage, beaks, and legs are beautifully rendered in this exquisite hand-colored engraving, offering a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of the mid-19th century. The skillful use of color further enhances the birds' natural beauty, making this a truly captivating work of art.
