EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Gosset Arms pub in Bethnal Green, London, as it looked in the 1950s. The corner building, adorned with ornate brickwork and a distinctive sign, exudes a sense of history and community. The pub, which was located at E2 6NP, was a popular local watering hole for many years, as evidenced by the trading record on the back of the print, which lists its operation from 1939 to 1961. The Gosset Arms was once a proud part of the Hoare and Company Limited empire, a well-known name in the public house industry. However, like many establishments of its kind, it underwent significant changes in the late 20th century. In 1996, it was converted into five flats, marking the end of an era for this beloved Bethnal Green institution. This photograph, taken in 1955, offers a glimpse into a bygone era of London's East End. It invites us to imagine the lively conversations and laughter that once filled the pub's cozy interior, and the colorful characters who made it their regular haunt. The Gosset Arms may no longer exist as a pub, but its legacy lives on in the memories of those who frequented it and in this beautiful photograph.
