EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Duke of Lancaster Public House in the heart of Shoreditch, London, as it looked in the 1930s. The image, taken by an unknown photographer, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the pub's distinctive red brick facade adorned with ornate white detailing. The name of the pub, "Duke of Lancaster," is prominently displayed above the entrance, with the "Public House" sign below. The Duke of Lancaster was a beloved local watering hole, having been established in the early 20th century. It was owned and operated by the Charrington and Company Limited, a well-known brewery in London at the time. The pub was a staple in the community, providing a place for locals to gather, socialize, and enjoy a pint. Sadly, the Duke of Lancaster, like many historic buildings in Shoreditch, did not survive the test of time. By July 2018, the pub had been demolished, making way for modern residential flats. The back of this print includes the address of the pub, E2 8FP, as well as the date of demolition, 1931. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the rich history and character that once defined the Shoreditch neighborhood, and the pubs that were an integral part of it.
