EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph, titled "Pennatulacea" and created by Adolf Glitsch from an original illustration by Ernst Haeckel in 1904, showcases a diverse array of Pennatulacea sea pen corals. Sea pens are a group of cnidarians, also known as Pennatulids, that resemble underwater plants with their elongated, feather-like branches. The image features eleven distinct species, each with unique characteristics. In the center, the Umbellula encrinus sea pen displays a fan-like structure with numerous tentacles. To its left, the Halipteris finmarchica has a more compact appearance with shorter branches and a brown coloration. The Kophobelemnon leukarti, located at the bottom right, is distinguished by its long, white, branching structures. The Renilla reniformis, represented by the small, white, spherical structures, is a bioluminescent species, while the Stylatula elegans and Stylatula kinbergi, depicted in the upper right corner, have long, slender branches with small, bulbous tips. The Virgularia glacialis, Virgularia rumphi, Virgularia mirabilis, and Pteroeides spinosum are also shown, each with distinct branching patterns and colors. This artwork is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the marine environment and the meticulous observation and documentation of Ernst Haeckel, a pioneering German naturalist, and Adolf Glitsch, a skilled chromolithographer. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the sea pen corals bring the underwater world to life, offering a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of our oceans.
