This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts the Paris Peacock Butterfly, Papilio paris, and the Mottled Emigrant Butterfly, Catopsilia pyranthe, two exquisite species of Lepidoptera discovered in the 19th century. The Paris Peacock Butterfly, also known as the Swallowtail Peacock, is characterized by its vibrant blue and orange wings, with intricate black lines and eyespots. The Mottled Emigrant, also known as the Common Emigrant or the Pyranthus Swallowtail, is distinguished by its mottled brown and orange wings, with a distinctive black line running through the middle. The Paris Peacock Butterfly was first described by the English naturalist John O. Westwood in 1837, in the new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology published by Bohn, London.
