EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Geonoma maxima, also known as the True Sago Palm, Metroxylon sagu, or Wouae rumphii. The image is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," a comprehensive dictionary of natural sciences published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is considered one of the greatest botanical artists of the 19th century. The Geonoma maxima is a large, evergreen palm tree native to Central and South America. Its stems are cylindrical and can reach up to 12 meters in height. The tree is known for its edible starch-rich pinnate leaves, which were historically harvested and processed to produce sago, a staple food in the Pacific Islands. The tree's fruit, which appears as a cluster of small, round, red or yellow berries, is also edible and rich in vitamin C. The intricate details of the palm tree's leaves, trunk, and fruit are beautifully captured in this engraving, showcasing Turpin's exceptional skill as a botanical illustrator. The use of handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a stunning addition to any botanical collection.
