EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving is taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder, or Picture Book for Children, published in Weimar in 1798. The illustration showcases a vibrant and intricately detailed arrangement of various types of shells, including oysters and their relatives, as well as cone and wentletrap shells. At the center of the image lies an Oyster shell (Malleus malleus), with its distinctive fan-shaped shell and pearly interior. Surrounding it are several varieties of cone shells. The first cone shell is identified as Conus cedonulli, characterized by its tall, spiral tower and colorful bands. Nearby, Conus ammiralis cone shells are depicted, distinguished by their large size and intricate, striped patterns. Precious and common wentletrap shells are also displayed in this illustration. The precious wentletrap, Epitonium scalare, is identified by its delicate, fan-shaped shell with a raised, scalloped edge. The common wentletrap, Epitonium clathrus, is shown next to it, featuring a more rounded and textured shell. This image not only showcases the beauty and diversity of these marine mollusks but also serves as an educational tool for young learners, providing them with an early appreciation for the natural world and its wonders.
