EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, taken from Mary Anne Venning's educational book "A Geographical Present being Descriptions of the Principal Countries of the World," published in London by Darton, Harvey and Darton in 1818, offers a glimpse into the lives of the Otaheiteans or natives of Tahiti, located in the beautiful Polynesian islands of the Pacific Ocean. The image features a Tahitian man and woman, both adorned in traditional attire, standing in front of a lush palm tree. The man wears a cloak made of tapa, a bark cloth, draped over his shoulders and around his waist. He holds a cudgel, a traditional weapon, in one hand and a set of panpipes in the other. The woman wears a grass skirt, which is a staple of Polynesian female attire, and a necklace made of shells and other natural materials. Her hair is styled in intricate braids, and she holds a fan in one hand. The Otaheiteans, also known as Tahitians, were a proud and independent people who lived on the island of Tahiti and its surrounding islands, including Tanna in Vanuatu and the New Hebrides (now known as Tana and the other islands of the New Hebrides). They were renowned for their warm hospitality, rich cultural traditions, and natural beauty. Mary Anne Venning was a prolific writer and tutor of the early 19th century, and her educational books on geography, conchology, and mineralogy were widely read during the Regency and Georgian periods. This image, which is a testament to her meticulous research and attention to detail, provides a fascinating window into the world of the Otaheiteans and the vibrant cultures of the Pacific Islands.
