EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Rene Primevere's "Lessons Complements de Buffon," showcases two magnificent birds of prey native to the African continent: the Ornate Hawk-Eagle (Spizaetus ornatus) and the African Harrier-Hawk (Polyboroides typus), also known as the African Marsh Harrier or the Swamp Harrier. The Ornate Hawk-Eagle, with its striking plumage and powerful build, is a bird of prey found in the forests and woodlands of Central and South America. However, this engraving features an African counterpart, the Uru Taurana, a rare and enigmatic subspecies believed to inhabit the forests of Central Africa. The Ornate Hawk-Eagle is known for its distinctive crest and bright yellow eyes, which give it an intimidating and regal appearance. The African Harrier-Hawk, depicted in the foreground, is a medium-sized bird of prey with a distinctive crest and long, broad wings. It is found in wetlands and grasslands across Africa, and is an agile and versatile hunter, preying on a wide range of animals, from rodents and snakes to birds and reptiles. This exquisite illustration, produced by the renowned French publishing house Pourrat Freres in Paris in 1838, is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and artistic skill of the time. The intricate engraving and vibrant hand-coloring bring these magnificent birds to life, offering a glimpse into the natural history and zoology of the African continent during the 19th century.
