EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured lithograph depicts the Oriental Sweetgum tree, scientifically known as Liquidambar orientalis, also referred to as the Turkish Sweetgum. The botanical illustration was created by David Blair and published in Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen's "Medicinal Plants" in London, 1880. The image was further enhanced by the skilled hand of Hanhart. The Oriental Sweetgum is an elegant tree native to the eastern Mediterranean and western Asia. Its distinctive star-shaped leaves, which turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and purple in the fall, are showcased in this intricate and detailed illustration. The tree is also renowned for its sticky resin, which is often referred to as gum, that oozes from its bark. The Oriental Sweetgum has a rich history in herbal medicine. The resin was used in traditional medicine for various purposes, including as a remedy for wounds, as a treatment for diarrhea, and as an expectorant. The bark was also used to make a decoction to treat fever and dysentery. The botanical illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of the late 19th century, showcasing the beauty and medicinal properties of the Oriental Sweetgum. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring the tree to life, making it a valuable addition to any botanical collection or study of medicinal plants.
