EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored steel engraving depicts the vibrant Orange-breasted Bushshrike, Chlorophoneus sulfureopectus, also known as the Sulphur-breasted Bushshrike or Orange-breasted Helmetshrike. The image is taken from William John Swainson's "Birds of Western Africa," published in Sir William Jardine's Naturalists Library: Ornithology, in Edinburgh in 1837. Swainson's meticulous illustration was later transformed into this stunning engraving by William Lizars. The Orange-breasted Bushshrike is a medium-sized bird with distinctive plumage. The male is adorned with an orange-yellow breast, white underparts, and a white crest on its head. Its back and wings are a deep glossy green, with black wings edged in white. The female, on the other hand, has a more subdued appearance, with a brownish-orange breast and a brown crest. This bird is native to the forests and woodlands of West and Central Africa. It is a member of the Malaconotidae family, which also includes the Prionopidae or helmetshrikes and the Lanidae or shrikes. The Orange-breasted Bushshrike is an omnivorous bird, feeding on fruits, insects, and small vertebrates. This beautiful engraving is a testament to the intricacy and detail of 19th-century ornithological illustrations. It provides a glimpse into the natural history of the Orange-breasted Bushshrike and the rich biodiversity of Africa during that time. Today, this species remains an important part of the continent's avian heritage and continues to captivate birdwatchers and naturalists alike.
