EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the Norwegian wasp, Dolichovespula norwegica, also known as the Norwegian hornet or the British wasp, Vespa britannica. The wasp is shown in great detail, with its distinctive yellow and black stripes, long legs, and prominent wings. It is perched on a twig, its mandibles clenched as if ready to defend its nest. The Norwegian wasp is a solitary wasp, native to Europe and Asia. Unlike social wasps, which build large colonies, Norwegian wasps construct their nests individually, typically in pre-existing burrows or hollow stems. They are important pollinators and play a crucial role in controlling pest insect populations. This illustration was drawn and engraved by the skilled hand of Richard Polydore Nodder, from a specimen observed by the renowned British naturalist, William Elford Leach. The illustration was published in Leach's Zoological Miscellany, a collection of natural history observations and descriptions, published by McMillan in London in 1814. The intricacy and precision of the engraving showcase the high-quality standards of scientific illustration during the early 19th century. The Norwegian wasp remains an essential subject of study in entomology, and this beautiful illustration serves as a testament to the fascination and importance of insects in the natural world.
