EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from G. T. Wilhelms Encyclopedia of Natural History published in Augsburg, Germany, in 1794, showcases two of the most intriguing and enigmatic birds from the animal kingdom: the Northern Cassowary and the extinct Dodo. The Northern Cassowary (Casuarius unappendiculatus), depicted on the left, is a large, flightless bird native to the tropical rainforests of New Guinea and northeastern Australia. With its distinctive blue-black plumage, wattles, and helmet-like casque, it is a striking and imposing creature. On the right, the extinct Dodo (Raphus cucullatus) is shown in a more whimsical and fashionable light, as it was often depicted in 18th-century European art and literature. The Dodo, native to the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, was another large, flightless bird, but it was unique in its appearance, with a round body, small wings, and a large, decapitated head. The image of the Northern Cassowary and the Dodo is further enhanced by the addition of fashionable accessories from the 18th century. The Northern Cassowary is adorned with a fashionable hat and feathers, reminiscent of the tall, conical hats popular during the time, while the Dodo is depicted wearing a bonnet and feathers, a style favored by Marie Antoinette and other fashionable ladies of the time. The engraving is the work of the Bavarian clergyman and naturalist, Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm (1758-1811), who was known as the German Buffon. The image is a testament to the fascination that exotic animals held for Europeans during the 18th century, and the desire to document and preserve their natural history. The intricate details of the engraving, the vibrant colors, and the addition of fashionable accessories make this a beautiful and intriguing work of art, as well as an important historical document.
