In this copperplate engraving by N.C. Goodnight, taken from Francis Grose's "Military Antiquities respecting a History of the English Army," published in London in 1812 by Stockdale, we are transported back in time to the Norman era. The image portrays a group of Norman soldiers, their determined expressions and postures conveying the intensity and focus of a military campaign. The soldiers are dressed in the armor of the time, a combination of chainmail and plate armor. The chainmail, a flexible and protective layer made of interlinked metal rings, covers their limbs and torso, while the plate armor, with its heavy, flat metal pieces, shields their chests and backs.
