EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: A New Era of Connection: New Lambeth Bridge on the River Thames, London, 1932 2.. This evocative photograph captures the essence of a bygone era as the New Lambeth Bridge, a symbol of modernity and progress, stands poised to open its arms to the River Thames in London, on the brink of July 1932. The bridge, a testament to the ingenuity and architectural prowess of the 1930s, is seen here in its final stages of construction, with the Grade II listed Thames House, an elegant and imposing structure, standing proudly on the opposite bank. The New Lambeth Bridge, an engineering marvel of its time, was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott to replace the old Lambeth Bridge, which had become increasingly inadequate for the growing traffic demands. The new bridge, with its distinctive art deco style and elegant suspension cables, was a sight to behold, promising to streamline the flow of traffic and pedestrian movement between the north and south banks of the River Thames. Thames House, a large and impressive building, was constructed in the late 1920s and early 1930s. It was designed by the architectural firm of Mewes and Davis and is a fine example of the Art Deco style that was popular during the period. The building, with its distinctive stepped-back design and ornate detailing, served as a headquarters for various government departments and is now a Grade II listed building, a testament to its historical and architectural significance. This photograph, taken shortly before the official opening of the New Lambeth Bridge, offers a glimpse into the past, a time when London was on the cusp of modernity and progress. It serves as a reminder of the enduring power of architecture and engineering to shape our cities and connect communities, while also preserving the rich history of the past.
