EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts a Muslim woman in the act of performing her daily prayer ritual, Namaz or Salah. The image, titled "Musulmane che fanno il Namaz" (Muslim women making the Namaz), is taken from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1842. The engraving is a reproduction of an illustration from Ignace Mouradgea d'Ohsson's "Tableau Général de l'Empire Ottoman," published in Paris in 1790. The Muslim woman in the image is shown standing, bowing, and prostrating herself in prayer. She wears a long, flowing robe, known as a thobe, and a headscarf, or hijab. The intricate patterns and vibrant colors of her clothing are beautifully rendered in the hand-coloring. The background of the image features various Islamic symbols, including coins and medals, as well as monuments and architectural elements typical of the Ottoman Empire. In the foreground, there are hints of other figures and objects, suggesting a bustling marketplace or a busy urban scene. The presence of the Celtiberians, a people indigenous to the Iberian Peninsula in Spain, is also indicated in the image, as evidenced by the Celtic motifs and symbols scattered throughout. This reflects the rich cultural diversity of the Ottoman Empire, which extended far beyond its traditional borders and incorporated various ethnic and religious groups. The engraving is a fascinating glimpse into the historical fashion and cultural practices of the Muslim world during the 19th century, and offers a unique perspective on the interconnectedness of different civilizations and peoples.
