EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored engraving, created by Fournier for Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle (Dictionary of Natural History) published in Paris in 1849, showcases two fascinating species of the animal kingdom: the Moose or Eurasian Elk (Alces alces) and the Royal Antelope or Pygmy Deer (Neotragus pygmaeus). The Moose, a large and majestic creature, is depicted with its distinctive elongated snout, large antlers, and shaggy coat. This native of the northern hemisphere, particularly Eurasia and North America, is the largest extant species in the deer family. In stark contrast, the tiny Royal Antelope, or Pygmy Deer, is shown gracefully leaping through the forest. This diminutive antelope, native to Southeast Asia, is the smallest antelope species in the world. Despite its small size, it is an agile and elusive creature, with a coat that ranges from reddish-brown to grayish-brown. The intricate details of this engraving, handcolored to bring out the natural beauty of each animal, make it a stunning addition to any natural history collection. The Moose and Royal Antelope, two remarkable creatures from different ends of the size spectrum, are brought together in this exquisite illustration, showcasing the rich diversity of the natural world.
