EDITORS COMMENTS
A mischievous monkey brings holiday cheer with a dash of comic relief in this late Victorian Christmas card from the 1890s. The playful primate, dressed in a chef's outfit complete with a tall hat and apron, sits in a cozy kitchen scene. He leans over a cat, which is perched on a chair near the fireplace. With a wicked grin, the monkey reaches out and pulls the cat's tail, causing it to yowl in surprise. The cat, in turn, looks back with a disapproving expression. The warm glow of the fireplace casts a soft light on the scene, while a frying pan and other kitchen utensils are scattered about, adding to the humanized and anthropomorphic touch. The snow outside the window completes the wintery Christmas setting. This charming card, filled with humor and holiday spirit, would have brought joy to its recipient over a century ago.
