EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored steel engraving depicts the Mexican poppy or flowering thistle, Argemone mexicana, also known as cardo or cardosanto. The image is based on a botanical illustration by Edouard Maubert and was engraved by Alphonse-Leon Noel for the publication "La Regne Vegetal: Flore Medicale" by Pierre Oscar Reveil, published by A. Dupuis, Fr. Gerard, and Francois Herincqs in Paris between 1864 and 1871. The Mexican poppy is a striking plant native to Mexico and the southwestern United States. It is characterized by its large, velvety, and prickly leaves, which are covered in small, sharp spines. The plant produces tall stems topped with large, showy flowers that range in color from yellow to red and can grow up to 1 meter in height. The flowers have a distinctive, sweet fragrance and bloom in the late summer and fall. The Mexican poppy has a long history of traditional use in Mexican and Native American medicine. The plant contains several bioactive compounds, including alkaloids, flavonoids, and terpenoids, which have been found to have analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. The roots and leaves have been used to treat various conditions, including pain, fever, and gastrointestinal disorders. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving captures the essence of the Mexican poppy, showcasing its unique features and the delicate artistry of 19th-century botanical illustration.
