This stunning handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving depicts Mexican cotton, also known as Upland cotton or Gossypium hirsutum, from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, published in Florence, Italy in 1837. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), and engraved by Stanghi. Mexican cotton, a species of the genus Gossypium, is one of the most widely cultivated crops in the world. It is native to Central America and Mexico, and was domesticated by the ancient Mayans and Aztecs thousands of years ago. The plant is characterized by its soft, downy leaves and pink or white flowers. The cotton bolls, which contain the fibers used to make textiles, grow in a protective capsule. The engraving also features several other plants in the same illustration, including Pussy Willow (Salix caprea), Goat's Willow (Salix caprina), Italian Willow (Salix caprea var. italica), and Caprese Willow (Salix caprea var. caprese). These plants were likely included to provide context and to show the relationship between the cotton plant and its surrounding vegetation. Turpin is considered one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to capture the essence of each plant he illustrated.
