EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph depicts the Merchant Cap Jellyfish, Periphylla periphylla, also known as Peromedusae jellyfish, from the intricately detailed illustrations of Ernst Haeckel's seminal work, "Art Forms in Nature" or "Kunstformen der Natur," published in Leipzig, Germany, in 1904. Adolf Glitsch, a skilled chromolithographer, brought Haeckel's illustrations to life through this beautiful print. The Merchant Cap Jellyfish, a member of the Peromedusae order, is characterized by its distinctive bell-shaped body and the presence of eight long, trailing tentacles. This jellyfish derives its common name from its resemblance to a merchant's cap, with the bell-shaped body acting as the cap and the tentacles as the brim. This particular species, Periphylla periphylla, is also known by other names such as Periphylla mirabilis, Periphylla peronii, and Periphylla hyacinthina. These jellyfish are found in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, typically in shallow waters. They exhibit a fascinating behavior where they can cling to various substrates, such as rocks or corals, using their mucus-covered bodies. Haeckel's illustrations, including this one of the Merchant Cap Jellyfish, have had a profound impact on the art and design world, particularly in the Art Nouveau movement. The intricate, organic forms captured in these illustrations have inspired numerous artists and designers, showcasing the beauty and complexity of the natural world.
