Cemetery Commission Commonwealth Cwgc Graves Ieper Koyli Tyne Ypres

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Memorial to the King's Own York Light Infantry (KOYLI) at Tyne Cot Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) Cemetery in Belgium. The memorial stands as a poignant tribute to the brave soldiers of the KOYLI who lost their lives during the First World War, particularly during the Battle of Passchendaele and the Third Battle of Ypres, which took place in and around the town of Ieper, or Ypres, in 1917. Tyne Cot CWGC Cemetery is the largest Commonwealth war cemetery in Belgium, with over 11,950 graves and memorials. The memorial to the KOYLI, unveiled in 1928, is a reminder of the significant role the regiment played in the Allied forces during the First World War. The inscription on the memorial reads, "To the Glory of God and in proud and loving memory of the officers, non-commissioned officers, soldiers and men of the King's Own York Light Infantry who fell in the Great War 1914-1918." The photograph was taken in 2016, and the scene is one of quiet reflection and remembrance. The sun casts a warm glow over the rows of white headstones, creating a peaceful atmosphere that belies the turmoil and devastation of the war that once raged through this land. The memorial to the KOYLI stands proudly at the heart of the cemetery, a symbol of the sacrifices made by the brave men of the regiment and a reminder of the enduring bond between the people of the United Kingdom and Belgium. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission was established in 1917 to mark the graves of the fallen soldiers of the Commonwealth forces during the First and Second World Wars. Today, the Commission maintains over 2,500 cemeteries and memorials in 153 countries, ensuring that the sacrifices of those who gave their lives in the service of their countries will never be forgotten.
