EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print captures the Memorial to Harry Patch, the last surviving British Veteran of the First World War's Battle of Passchendaele. The memorial, privately erected by Harry himself, stands on the edge of the Steenbeek stream in Flanders, Belgium. It serves as a poignant reminder of the 7th Battalion of the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry (DCLI), with whom Harry served. The church spire of Langemarck, the village attacked and captured by the Battalion at dawn on August 16, 1917, is visible in the back centre of the picture. Harry was present at the unveiling of the memorial in September 2008, during his 110th birthday year. Tragically, Harry passed away just over a year later on July 25, 2009, at the age of 111 years, 1 month, 1 week, 1 day. The memorial stands as a testament to the bravery and sacrifice of Harry and his comrades during the First World War, which took place in the Ypres Salient of Belgium, between 1914 and 1918. This poignant image evokes the historical significance of Harry's life and the enduring impact of the Great War on the world.
