EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a McDonnell RF-4C Phantom jet, specifically model 64-1073 (msn 1116, base code AR), assigned to the 1st Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron of the 10th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing, based at RAF Alconbury in England. The image was captured during the squadron's deployment to RAF Upper Heyford on August 29, 1970, while they were flying with the 123rd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing. The RF-4C Phantom is a twin-engine, all-weather, long-range, subsonic reconnaissance aircraft, and this particular aircraft served in the United States Air Force for over a decade. Unfortunately, on May 16, 1982, during a low-level training mission, 64-1073 crashed in the Cherokee National Forest in Kentucky. Despite the incident, both crew members ejected safely, marking the end of this aircraft's service in the US Air Force. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the brave men and women who have served in the aviation industry, and the risks they take to ensure the safety and security of their nations. The RF-4C Phantom remains an iconic symbol of the aeronautical era, and its legacy continues to inspire generations of aviation enthusiasts and professionals alike.
