EDITORS COMMENTS
In the heart of the tumultuous 15th century, during the Wars of the Roses, Queen Margaret of Anjou (1430-1482) - the resilient and determined wife of King Henry VI - found herself in an unexpected predicament. With her young son, Prince Edward, in tow, they were robbed in the moonlit countryside, their royal status providing no protection against the lawlessness that plagued the land. Despite the danger and the indignity of the situation, Margaret did not resort to anger or fear. Instead, she displayed an unwavering compassion and pleaded for mercy from their assailant. The image captures a poignant moment of human connection amidst the chaos of war, as the queen's gentle words and beseeching gaze attempt to touch the heart of the robber. The Wars of the Roses, a series of conflicts for the English throne between the houses of Lancaster (represented by Henry VI and Margaret of Anjou) and York, raged from 1455 to 1485. This evocative scene serves as a reminder of the human cost of war, as well as the strength and resilience of Margaret of Anjou, who continued to fight for her husband's claim to the throne even in the face of adversity. The photograph, taken from Mary Evans Prints Online and credited to Tom Gillmor of Mary Evans Picture Library, transports us back to a time of turmoil and uncertainty, where even in the darkest moments, the human spirit shines through.
