EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the dorsal and ventral views of the Mantis Shrimp, Lysiosquilla scabricauda, also known as the Spiny Stomatopod or Squilla coda-scabra. The intricate illustration was created in 1837 as part of Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy. The Mantis Shrimp, a member of the Stomatopod order, is renowned for its unique and complex structure. With its long, spiny arms, this crustacean is able to capture and crush its prey with great force. The illustration reveals the intricate details of the shrimp's body, from the small, pincer-like legs to the large, compound eyes that are capable of seeing polarized light. The creation of this illustration was a collaborative effort between several skilled artisans. The drawing was executed by Jean Gabriel Pretre, while Corsi engraved the plate and Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin directed the project. Turpin, a French botanical illustrator of the 19th century, is considered one of the greatest in his field. The use of the stipple engraving technique, which involves the application of small dots to create shading and texture, adds to the depth and detail of the image. The Mantis Shrimp is a fascinating marine creature, and this beautiful illustration offers a glimpse into the natural world as it was understood over 180 years ago. The intricacy and care put into the creation of this work is a testament to the skill and dedication of the artists and scientists involved.
