EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is a hand-colored copperplate engraving depicting a Mandinka man and woman from West Africa, taken from the travels of Mungo Park. The engraving, created by Dell' Acqua and hand-colored by Lazaretti, is part of Giovanni Battista Sonzogno's Collection of the Most Interesting Voyages, published in Milan between 1815 and 1817. Mungo Park (1771-1806) was a Scottish explorer and medical doctor who embarked on several expeditions to Africa in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His most famous journey was to explore the Niger River, which he undertook between 1805 and 1806. This engraving is believed to be based on observations made during this expedition. The Mandinka people, also known as the Mandingo, are an ethnic group that inhabits a large area in West Africa, stretching from Senegal in the west to Ghana in the east. They are known for their rich cultural heritage, which includes a complex social structure, a strong oral tradition, and a distinctive language. The man in the image is depicted wearing a long robe, a headcloth, and sandals. He holds a staff in one hand and a bowl or calabash in the other. The woman wears a long, flowing dress and carries a child on her back. She also wears jewelry, including bracelets and anklets. Both the man and woman have intricate tattoos on their faces and bodies. This image offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the Mandinka people during a time when European explorers were just beginning to document their encounters with African cultures. It is a reminder of the rich diversity and complexity of the African continent and its people, and the importance of preserving their history and traditions for future generations.
