Major General Edward Braddock's Force Under Attack in the Ohio River Valley, July 1755

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print depicts a pivotal moment in the early stages of the French and Indian War (1754-1763), as British forces under the command of Major General Edward Braddock (1695-1755) faced the French and their Native American allies in the Ohio River Valley on July 9, 1755. Braddock's expedition aimed to secure the region for the British, but the campaign ended in disaster. In the foreground of the print, Braddock's horse is seen rearing up in fear as the general clings to its back, a testament to the chaos and confusion of the battlefield. Smoke rises from the trees, obscuring the view and adding to the sense of disorientation. Braddock's men, dressed in red coats and bearing muskets and bayonets, are shown in various stages of combat, some engaged in hand-to-hand fighting, others taking aim with their rifles. Horses and men are intermingled, creating a scene of frenetic activity. In the background, French soldiers and Native American warriors can be seen advancing, their flags unfurled and their weapons at the ready. The print captures the intensity and violence of the conflict, as well as the desperation and determination of the soldiers on both sides. Tragically, Braddock was mortally wounded during the battle and died of his wounds a few days later. The defeat was a significant setback for the British, but it also served to galvanize support for the war effort and ultimately led to British victory. This print offers a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made during this pivotal moment in American history.
