EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Mahuwa tree, scientifically known as Madhuca longifolia, or Bassia longifolia. The Mahuwa tree is a large, evergreen shrub or small tree native to the Himalayas, Tibet, and North Africa. Its common names include Goji tree, Chinese wolfberry tree, Boxthorn, and Barbary matrimony vine. The Mahuwa tree is renowned for its edible red fruit, which is rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. The fruit is commonly consumed as a dietary supplement or used to make tea, jams, and wines. In traditional Chinese medicine, the fruit is believed to have numerous health benefits, including improving eyesight, boosting energy levels, and enhancing longevity. The Mahuwa tree has a rich history and has been used for various purposes for centuries. Its wood is hard and durable, making it suitable for making tools, furniture, and even musical instruments. The tree's bark is used in traditional medicine to treat ailments such as diarrhea, dysentery, and fever. This beautiful illustration was created by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, and his work is known for its exceptional detail and accuracy. The illustration was drawn and directed by Turpin, and the engraving was executed by Corsi. The plate was published by Batelli e Figli in Florence, Italy, in 1837 as part of Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science. The Mahuwa tree's intricate structure and vibrant colors are beautifully captured in this handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving, making it a valuable addition to any botanical collection.
