EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a group of Macedonian Gypsies encamped at Royston, Hertfordshire, circa 1905. At the turn of the 20th century, large numbers of Roma people from Eastern Europe, including Macedonia, began to migrate to England in search of work, escaping the political turmoil and persecution that was rampant in their homelands. The first wave of Roma immigrants arrived just prior to the First World War, and another larger group came after tensions escalated in the 1930s. In this image, we see a community of Roma Gypsies gathered together, likely taking a brief respite from their travels. The men and women are dressed in traditional Romani attire, with the women wearing colorful skirts and headscarves, and the men in long, flowing coats and hats. The children play and explore their surroundings, while the adults tend to their belongings. The Roma people were often met with hostility and discrimination in England, and local authorities would frequently move them on from towns and villages. As seen in this photograph, the Gypsies were forced to travel in convoys, moving from place to place in search of work and a temporary place to call home. Despite the challenges they faced, the Roma community remained resilient, maintaining their rich cultural traditions and nomadic way of life.
