EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely detailed hand-colored steel engraving depicts a Lion-tailed Macaque, Macaca silenus, an endangered primate species native to the Western Ghats of India. The macaque, also known as the Wanderoo monkey, is shown in a naturalistic setting, with its distinctive mane of black hair around its face and shoulders, and its agile body poised on a branch. This engraving is a beautiful example of the high-quality illustrations produced for Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Monkeys, published in Edinburgh in 1844. The illustration was created by James Stewart and engraved by W.H. Lizars, who expertly captured the intricacies of the macaque's fur, facial features, and posture. The Lion-tailed Macaque is an Old World monkey, and is considered an important species due to its unique characteristics and role in the ecological balance of its habitat. However, this species is currently endangered due to habitat loss, fragmentation, and hunting. This engraving serves as a reminder of the importance of conserving these magnificent creatures and their natural habitats.
