EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored steel engraving, created by the Pauquet brothers and based on an original illustration by Alexis Nicolas Noel for Hippolyte Lucas's "Natural History of European Butterflies" (Histoire Naturelle des Lepidopteres d'Europe), published in 1864, showcases four exquisite moths: the Light Crimson Underwing (Catocala promissa), Old Lady (Mormo maura), Drinker (Euthrix potatoria), and Yellow-tail (Euproctis similis). Each moth is depicted in stunning detail, with their intricate wing patterns and delicate features brought to life through the meticulous engraving and hand-coloring techniques. The Light Crimson Underwing, with its crimson-tinged wings adorned with intricate patterns, is shown in the upper left corner. The Old Lady, with its distinctive white spots and black wings, is depicted in the upper right. The Drinker, named for its habit of drinking water from puddles, is shown in the lower left, its wings spread wide to reveal the striking yellow and black patterns. Lastly, the Yellow-tail, with its vibrant yellow hindwings and brown forewings, is depicted in the lower right. This beautiful work of art not only showcases the natural beauty of these moths, but also highlights the exceptional skill of the Pauquet brothers and Alexis Nicolas Noel in capturing their essence through the medium of engraving and hand-coloring. A true testament to the natural history of European moths, this engraving is a must-have for any collector or enthusiast of natural history and the arts.
