EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage carte de visite features a portrait of Lieutenant-General Charles Nicolas Victor Oudinot, 2nd Duc de Reggio (1791-1863). Born on November 3, 1791, in Bar-le-Duc, Oudinot was the eldest son of Marshal Nicolas Oudinot and Charlotte Derlin. He followed in his father's footsteps and embarked on a distinguished military career. During the 1870s, 1880s, and 1890s, Oudinot rose through the ranks, becoming a prominent figure in the French military. His service during the 19th century was marked by significant events, including the French intervention in Mexico and the Crimean War. In 1852, he was made a duke and given the title Duc de Reggio. This photograph, taken likely during the 1860s, captures Oudinot in his later years. Dressed in the traditional uniform of a French general, he exudes an air of authority and dignity. The portrait is a testament to the rich heritage and cultural significance of the Victorian era. As a celebrity figure of the time, Oudinot's image would have been widely circulated through carte de visite prints like this one. The photograph offers a glimpse into the past, allowing us to connect with history and appreciate the traditions of a bygone era. This stunning vintage print, from the Mary Evans Picture Library, is an excellent addition to any collection focused on military history, 19th-century culture, or the history of France. Its high-quality and intriguing subject matter make it a valuable and captivating piece for both personal and educational use.
