EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured steel engraving, created by the Pauquet brothers after an illustration by Alexis Nicolas Noel for Hippolyte Lucas' Natural History of European Butterflies, showcases an enchanting encounter between a sallow kitten and a collection of prominent moths. The centerpiece of this intricately detailed image is the Wood Leopard Moth (Zeuzera pyrina), its leopard-like spots and elegant wings creating a striking contrast against the fur of the curious kitten. Surrounding the kitten are several other moth species, each showcasing their unique and intricate patterns. The Iron Prominent (Notodonta dromedarius) boasts a prominent crest on its thorax, while the Pebble Prominent (Notodonta ziczac) displays a mottled, pebble-like texture on its wings. The Wood Leopard Moth's cousin, the Furcula Furcula, is also present, its wings adorned with a distinctive Y-shaped marking. Additionally, the Wood Leopard Moth is joined by the Wood Swallowtails, including the Lesser Swallow Prominent (Pheosia gnoma) and the Wood Swallow Prominent (Notodonta clytie). The Wood Swallowtails are characterized by their long, pointed wings and elongated bodies. The Wood Leopard Moth and the Wood Swallowtails belong to the Notodontidae family, which are known for their distinctive life cycle, with a caterpillar stage that can last up to two years. This beautiful and intricate engraving not only showcases the natural beauty of these moths but also highlights the remarkable talent of the Pauquet brothers and Alexis Nicolas Noel in capturing their essence through art.
