This stunning chromolithograph depicts the King of Sweden, Roi de Suede, from the ancient equestrian armorials of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Europe in the 15th century, as illustrated in Loredan Larchey's Ancien Armorial Equestre de la Toison d'Or et de l'Europe au 15e siecle. The image, which dates back to Paris, 1890, is taken from illustrated manuscript 4790 housed in the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal. The King of Sweden is depicted in full regalia, proudly riding a horse and wearing the distinctive insignia of the Order of the Golden Fleece, a prestigious and ancient chivalric order established by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in 1430. The Order, which was named after the legend of Jason and the Golden Fleece, was meant to promote unity and friendship among European rulers. The King of Sweden's attire includes a long, flowing robe adorned with ermine fur, a golden crown, and a mantle draped over his shoulders, fastened by a golden clasp in the shape of a fleece. His horse is also adorned with trappings of gold and ermine, and the royal standard flies proudly above. The intricate details of the King's armor, the horse's harness, and the heraldic devices on the banners and shields surrounding the scene are a testament to the skill and artistry of the time.
