EDITORS COMMENTS
A Grand Farewell: Jumbo the Elephant's Journey to Millwall Docks, 1882 This image documents a significant moment in the historic journey of Jumbo the African elephant, as he is carefully hoisted from a barge to the quay at Millwall Docks, marking his departure from England to embark on his voyage to America. Purchased by the renowned American showman P.T. Barnum from the Zoological Society of London in 1882, Jumbo's acquisition was met with great excitement and media attention in both the UK and the US. The Illustrated London News dedicated its front page to Jumbo's journey, chronicling his departure from England with intricate detail. The elephant, who had become a beloved figure at the London Zoo, was carefully loaded onto a specially-commissioned crate or cage, which was then transported to the barge at the docks. As the sun sets on the Thames, a large crowd gathers to bid farewell to the gentle giant, who had captured the hearts of many during his time in London. With a sense of anticipation and wonder, Jumbo's journey to America was about to begin, ushering in a new era of entertainment and captivating audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. This photograph, a poignant reminder of Jumbo's historic journey, offers a glimpse into the logistical challenges and transport methods of the late 19th century, as well as the public's fascination with the exotic and the extraordinary.
