Johnny in the West Indies: A Tale of Pursuit and Defiance in the Caribbean Sea This handcoloured copperplate engraving, after an illustration by Charles Williams from John Mitford's "Adventures of Johnny Newcome in the Navy," published in London in 1819, depicts a thrilling moment from the popular nautical novel. The image finds the daring hero, Johnny Newcome, pursued by a formidable "black squadron" in the turquoise waters of the West Indies. Johnny, clad in his naval uniform, is seen leaping into a rowboat, his bicorn hat clutched in his hand, as he attempts to evade the relentless pursuit of an angry Massa planter and a band of enraged Quashee enslaved men, brandishing cudgels. The men, determined to capture or exact revenge on Johnny, are hot on his heels. In the background, Captain Newcome, waving his bicorn hat, is shown in a state of alarm as he orders his crew to man the guns and prepare for battle.
