EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, titled "John Dory, Magpie Perch, Silver Fish, and Butterfly Lobster," is an exquisite illustration from the renowned Australian naturalist Louisa Anne Meredith's book "Tasmanian Friends and Foes, Feathered, Furred and Finned," published in London in 1881 by Marcus Ward. The illustration, created by an unidentified artist, showcases a collection of marine and aquatic species native to Tasmania. At the center of the image, the John Dory, or Zeus faber, with its distinctive black spots and silver sides, gazes out curiously from the depths. To its left, the Magpie Perch, or Cheilodactylus nigripes, with its vibrant colors and intricate patterns, adds a splash of color to the otherwise monochromatic seascape. Swirling around the Magpie Perch, migratory Silver Fish, or Clupeoides spp., dart through the water, their shimmering scales reflecting the light. In the bottom right corner, the Butterfly Lobster, or Ibacus peronii, with its intricately patterned carapace and long antennae, rests on a bed of rocks. Surrounding these prominent species, various other marine and aquatic creatures make their home among the weeds and rocks. Among them are the Common Seadragon, Phyllopteryx taeniolatus, with its camouflaging colors and elongated snout; the Striped Cowfish, Aracana aurita, with its distinctive markings and spiky fins; and the Superb Dragonet, Foliatus ostracian, with its vibrant orange and black coloration. Louisa Anne Meredith, an accomplished artist and scientist, meticulously documented the natural world around her, providing a valuable record of Tasmania's unique biodiversity. This stunning illustration, a testament to her dedication and skill, continues to captivate and inspire viewers over a century later.
