EDITORS COMMENTS
Joan of Arc, also known as Jeanne d'Arc or the Maid of Orléans, is depicted in this powerful image from the Siege of Orleans in 1429. Born in eastern France in 1412, Joan claimed to have divine guidance from God and two angels, Saint Michael and Saint Catherine, to lead France against the English during the Hundred Years War. At just 17 years old, she gained the trust of King Charles VII and was sent to the besieged city of Orléans as part of a relief army. The city had been under English siege for over a year, and its citizens were on the brink of starvation. Joan's arrival marked a turning point in the conflict. With her white banner bearing the image of God and two angels, she led the French soldiers into battle, inspiring them with her courage and determination. The Siege of Orleans was lifted just nine days after Joan's arrival, a remarkable feat that solidified her legend. The victory was a significant turning point in the war, and Joan went on to lead several more successful military campaigns against the English. She was eventually captured by the Burgundians in 1430 and was later tried and executed for heresy in 1431. However, Joan's legacy lived on. She was canonized as a Roman Catholic saint in 1920, and her story continues to inspire people around the world. This image captures a pivotal moment in her remarkable life, as she leads her soldiers into battle with unwavering faith and determination.
