This haunting image captures the final moments of Joan of Arc's life as she is burned at the stake in Rouen, France on May 30, 1431. The Maid of Orléans, a peasant girl from Domrémy, had risen to become a military leader and savior of France during the Hundred Years' War. Her victories against the English were seen as divine interventions, and she was crowned as a hero and given the title 'The Maid of Orléans' by the French king. However, her triumphs were short-lived. In 1431, Joan was captured by the English and put on trial for heresy and witchcraft. Despite her denials, she was found guilty and sentenced to be burned at the stake. The execution took place in the Market Square of Rouen, in front of a large crowd. In this poignant scene, Frère Isambard, a Dominican friar, holds up a cross as he offers prayers for Joan's soul. Martin Ladvenu, a Franciscan friar, also prays for her salvation. The flames of the pyre are beginning to consume Joan's body, but her expression remains steadfast and resolute. Her martyrdom became a symbol of French national pride and her memory was venerated for centuries. This image, dated around 1412-1431, is a poignant reminder of the tumultuous times in which Joan of Arc lived and the ultimate price she paid for her beliefs and her country.
