EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: Jean Juvenal des Ursins, Archbishop of Reims (1388-1473) Jean Juvenal des Ursins, a distinguished ecclesiastical figure, is depicted in this exquisite handcoloured lithograph by Leopold Massard. The image is based on a miniature from the manuscript "Histoire de Charles VI" in Roger de Gaignières portfolio VII 29, published by Le Bibliophile Jacob in Paris in 1852. Born in 1388, Jean Juvenal des Ursins rose through the ranks of the Church to become the Archbishop of Reims in 1434. He served as an advisor to several French monarchs, including King Charles VI, whose history is chronicled in the manuscript from which this image is derived. Des Ursins is shown here wearing the full regalia of his ecclesiastical office. He wears a long, flowing cassock, the traditional garment of the clergy, adorned with intricate gold and red designs. Over this, he dons a coat with ermine fur lining and a purse, or "escarcelle," hanging from his belt. The most striking feature of his attire, however, is the impressive display of his arms on his sleeve. The archbishop's arms consist of a golden eagle with a red cross on its chest, perched atop a golden book, all against a blue background. This symbolizes his status as a bishop and the importance of learning and knowledge in his role as a spiritual leader. The meticulous detail and vibrant colours of this lithograph serve to highlight the grandeur and importance of Jean Juvenal des Ursins, both as a religious figure and as a historical personality. This image offers a fascinating glimpse into the opulence and symbolism of the ecclesiastical robes and insignia of the late Middle Ages.
