EDITORS COMMENTS
Christopher Sly, The Taming of the Shrew" is an enchanting 19th century illustration that brings to life the opening scene of William Shakespeare's classic comedy. The image, created by the skilled hand of artist Christopher Sly, captures the moment of transformation for the disorderly and drunken man, who is about to be deceived into believing he is a lord. The illustration shows a disheveled, heavyset man, clad in tattered clothing, slumped in an ornate chair, a bottle of ale in one hand and a pipe in the other. His eyes are glazed over, and his expression is one of deep intoxication. The setting is a dimly lit, old-fashioned tavern, with wooden walls adorned with peeling paint and cobwebs. The atmosphere is one of roughness and disorder, a fitting prelude to the chaos that will ensue in the play. Suddenly, the scene shifts as the curtains of the tavern are drawn back, and the man is startled out of his stupor by the entrance of Lord and Lady Capulet, who, under the direction of the mischievous Lord Induction, have conspired to deceive the drunken man into believing he is a nobleman. The man, now known as Lord Sly, is taken aback by the sudden change in his circumstances, but he is intrigued by the prospect of being a lord and quickly adapts to his new role. This illustration, with its masterful use of light and shadow, captures the essence of the opening scene of "The Taming of the Shrew," a comedy of deception, transformation, and the taming of a shrew. The image is a testament to the power of theatre to transport us to another world, and to the enduring appeal of Shakespeare's timeless works.
