EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts the exquisite Humboldt's Lily, Lilium humboldtii, a rare and beautiful flowering plant endemic to the Andes Mountains in South America. The illustration is taken from "Flowers of the Gardens and Hothouses of Europe," a comprehensive botanical work published in Ghent, Belgium, by Louis van Houtte and Charles Lemaire in 1870. The Humboldt's Lily, also known as the Alpine Lily or the Andean Lily, is a perennial herb that grows at high altitudes between 3,000 and 4,500 meters. The plant produces large, showy, white flowers with a distinctive orange-red spot at the base of each petal, which bloom in the summer months. The lily's large, broad leaves are green and glossy, and the plant can grow up to 1.5 meters in height. The discovery of the Humboldt's Lily is attributed to the famous German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt, who explored South America in the early 19th century. Humboldt's Lily was first described by the French botanist Jacques Denis Choisy in 1837, and was named in honor of Humboldt's groundbreaking scientific expeditions. This beautiful botanical illustration captures the intricate details of the Humboldt's Lily's flowers and leaves, providing a vivid and accurate representation of this rare and enchanting plant. The use of handcolouring adds depth and richness to the image, making it a true masterpiece of botanical art.
