EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking handcoloured lithograph, we are transported back to the opulent court of Henri III of France (r. 1574-1589), as we behold the image of a house servant in livery, standing attentively before a grandiose royal residence. The servant, dressed in the distinctive attire of the French monarchy's household staff, is depicted wearing a short, red tunic adorned with gold buttons and a white collar, along with a matching apron and a tall, conical cap. The servant's left hand is placed respectfully over the heart, while his right hand holds a long staff, symbolizing his role as a valet de pied du roi, or "footman of the king." The intricately detailed background of the print reveals a sprawling chateau, complete with towering turrets, ornate balconies, and a grand entranceway, all bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun. The meticulous attention to historical accuracy is evident in the exquisite rendering of the servant's livery, as well as the architectural and decorative elements of the royal abode. This image is derived from a portrait in the gallery portfolio of Roger de Gaignières, a renowned French antiquarian and collector, and was published in Paul Lacroix's "Costumes Historiques de la France" (Historical Costumes of France) in 1852. The publication of such detailed and meticulously researched works during the 19th century played a crucial role in preserving and documenting the rich cultural heritage of French history, allowing future generations to appreciate the splendor and grandeur of the past.
