EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the momentous event of the landing of thousands of horses for the Dardanelles Expeditionary Force at Mudros, Lemnos, during World War I. In 1916, the British Forces procured horses in vast numbers from all over Britain to serve various purposes, including carrying supplies and ammunition, transporting the wounded, and pulling guns. The horses, which were brought to the Mediterranean to support the campaign in Gallipoli, were transported across the sea in large transports. However, the final leg of their journey involved transhipping them from the sea-going transports into smaller lighters, as seen in this snapshot. The horses were skillfully hoisted using slings and tackle, a laborious and intricate process that required the utmost care and precision. The horses, many of which were unfamiliar with the sea, were understandably anxious during this stage of their journey. The men handling them, dressed in their military uniforms, work diligently to ensure their safety and calm their nerves. The horses' fear is palpable in their wide eyes and tense bodies, while the men's determination and focus are evident in their expressions. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the logistical challenges of transporting horses to the battlefields during World War I. It is a poignant reminder of the vital role these animals played in the war effort and the sacrifices they made alongside the soldiers.
