EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, taken in the late 19th century, captures the daily life of an Aheeer or Ahir man from the Soodra class in Delhi, India. Part of the extensive ethnographic series "The People of India: A Series of Photographic Illustrations," produced under the order of Lord Canning, the Viceroy during the Victorian era, this image offers a rare and authentic glimpse into the lives of indigenous communities that were often overlooked in the colonial records of the time. The Aheeers, also known as Ahirs, were traditionally pastoralists and farmers, belonging to the Soodra or Shudra class in the Hindu caste system. They are believed to have originated from the northern Indian states of Rajasthan and Haryana. In this photograph, the man is seen wearing simple yet distinctive clothing, including a white dhoti and a red turban, which are characteristic of the Aheeer community. He is holding a large earthenware water pot, or matka, on his head, a common practice among rural communities in India for carrying water. The photograph is a testament to the rich cultural heritage and diversity of India during the 19th century. It invites us to reflect on the lives of the native people and their traditions, which were often marginalized in the colonial discourse of the time. As we gaze at this image, we are transported back in time, offering us a unique perspective on the history and ethnicity of the people of India.
