EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricately detailed heads of four distinct species of auklets: the Tufted Puffin (Fratercula cirrhata, also known as the Tufted Auk or Tufted Puffin), the Parakeet Auklet (Aethia psittacula), and the Crested Auklet (Aethia cristatella). The Tufted Puffin is easily identified by its distinctive colorful bill and the tuft of feathers on its head. The Parakeet Auklet, with its vibrant green bill and yellow eyes, resembles a miniature parrot. The Crested Auklet sports a distinctive crest on its head, giving it its name. Joining these auklets in this exquisite illustration is the Perroquet Auk (Alca psittacula), also known as the Dusky Auklet, which can be distinguished by its dark plumage and small, dark bill. The Tufted, Parakeet, and Crested Auklets are native to the North Pacific Ocean, while the Dusky Auklet inhabits the North Atlantic. This stunning print, drawn and engraved by the renowned naturalist John Latham in 1824, is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the avian world. Hand-coloured using copperplate techniques, the print captures the intricate details of each bird's plumage and facial features, making it a valuable addition to any collection of natural history art. Latham's meticulous work continues to inspire and educate us about the natural world, providing a glimpse into the past and a reminder of the importance of preserving the natural world for future generations.
