EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases three revered deities of ancient Egyptian civilization: the goddess Isis, represented by a granite statue from the Villa Palombara 1, and two unidentified deities, one from the Kircherian Museum and the other from the Temple of Canopus in Tivoli. The intricately detailed engraving, a copperplate creation by Pietro Ruga, is based on an illustration by Lorenzo Rocceggiani from his comprehensive work, '100 Plates of Costumes Religious, Civil and Military of the Ancient Egyptians, Etruscans, Greeks and Romans.' Isis, the goddess of motherhood, magic, and fertility, is depicted with her characteristic throne on her head, adorned with the horns of a cow and the solar disc between them. She holds her traditional symbols, the Ankh and the scepter, while a snake coils around her body. The other two deities are less defined, but their regal bearing and elaborate headdresses suggest their divine status. The print, a testament to the classical civilization of Egypt, Etruscan, Greek, and Roman influences, offers a glimpse into the rich mythology and religious practices of these ancient cultures. Pietro Ruga's meticulous engraving brings the grandeur and mystique of these deities to life, transporting us back in time to an era of awe-inspiring art and spiritual reverence.
