EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, we witness the arrival of two Hawker Hunter FGA.76 jets, 704 and 705, at RAF Luqa in Malta during their delivery to the Abu Dhabi Defence Force Air Wing in April 1970. These jets were previously served in the Royal Air Force (RAF) as Hunter F Mk.4s, XF362 and XF367, respectively. The Hawker Hunter, a British single-engine, all-weather fighter aircraft, was first introduced in 1954 and became a mainstay of the RAF fleet for over two decades. The FGA.76 variant, specifically designed for the ground-attack role, was an advanced development of the Hunter series, featuring improved avionics and weapons systems. In the early 1970s, the Abu Dhabi Defence Force sought to modernize its air capabilities, and the acquisition of these ex-RAF Hunter FGA.76s was a significant step towards that goal. The aircraft were converted for their new role in the Middle East, equipped with various weapons systems, including rockets and bombs, to effectively carry out ground-attack missions. The photograph captures the essence of aviation history as these iconic jets, now adorned in the Abu Dhabi Defence Force livery, prepare for their new mission. The image is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Hawker Hunter and the evolving nature of military aviation. This photograph is part of The Peter Butt Aviation Collection, available through Mary Evans Prints Online, and offers a unique glimpse into the past, showcasing the rich history of military aircraft and their role in shaping the world we live in today.
